The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

A few reminders!

This post expired on March 18, 2023.

Good day everyone! Just a few reminders today on this rainy/slushy day. Don’t forget, it you are free tonight you won’t want to miss the event at Urbana University of the documentary called the Economics of Happiness. A great deal of the program discusses the local connection to our food system. Program begins at 7 and will feature a panel discussion afterwards. Be sure to come on out as it is really inspirational! Warning: It will make you want to support local foods even more than you already do!

I’m hoping everyone had a wonderful St. Patrick’s day! We spent a portion of our day celebrating with a 4-H meeting which is a great “green” way of living in itself! With my personal lineage being Irish too, I feel a great connection to the wearing of the green. Here’s hoping you chose to celebrate in any way possible, maybe even with some local corned beef and cabbage?

I wanted to mention a great program that Mechanicsburg’s schools participated in over the weekend. I personally was able to enrich the food system this morning when I transported the donated loaves of bread made by elementary students under the direction of Tami Rockenbaugh, 4th grade teacher. The kids made 173 loaves of bread from supplies and guidance donated by the King Arthur Bread Company and their Life Skills program. The kids made beautiful loaves of bread and I delivered them to the Caring Kitchen, the Wherehouse and even a few to the Senior Apartments in Mechanicsburg. A great program with great benefits: teaching our youth to give back is so important! The kids each made two loaves: one to keep and one to donate. It was a wonderful lesson to all of us! Thanks to Tami for all the hard work that went into the program!

Don’t forget the market is open! I see some new honey from Jared’s Raw honey and even some beautfiul hyacinths from our special lady, Katie Hoover! These would look pretty on any table and even can be planted outside when done blooming to enjoy year after year! Take a peek at some of our new items as things are popping up just like the flowers outside! Spring is coming!
