The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Monday, Monday....

Good morning everyone! What a beautiful sunny day we have in front of us! I hope your weekend was restful and at the same time full of exciting fall activities to get us enjoying the season which surrounds us.

I am writing today to mention some new additions to the market. Not only are the products awesome, but the way they are grown is too. Welcome, welcome, welcome to Fresh Harvest Farm who joins us this week from Richwood to our north. Jeni and Doug Blackburn own and operate Fresh Harvest Farm which utilizes aquaponics, a growing method that produces lettuces, kale, celery, swiss chard, basil and more. This growing method uses a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics to produce year-round greens. I am excited to have them join us! Let’s all welcome them with open arms!

Jeni and Doug have been featured in a number of local publications lately and their explosive growth is due to their hard work and inventive personalities. We are so lucky to have them join us so we can have our salad greens, especially this late in the season.

Fresh Harvest has added two kinds of romaine, a butterhead and a variety called concept for us this week. Get your salad tongs ready and order your greens for that weekend get-together or fast and healthy mid-week meal. Top your delicous salad with some of the sweet peppers, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and other options while they last.

If you already ordered this week, no worries. You can always place another order if you wish and both orders will be combined in your market basket when you check out.

Again, let’s give a warm welcome to the inventive and exciting Fresh Harvest Farm! Welcome Jeni and Doug!

Good day guys!

Red raspberries are back!

They are here for such a short time that I had to give mention to those scrumptious, red raspberries! Champaign Berry Farm has them and we need to hurry! Great for pies, ice cream sundaes or cobblers! Use your imagination, but just hurry! All orders need to be in by 8 pm tomorrow night! Enjoy!

A good start to you!

Good day everyone! I wanted to quickly wish you a fantastic morning and a joyous week to each of you! The beautiful weather we have been having is surely good for our souls, isn’t it? I find myself chipping away at those unkind projects around the house with a smile (even if some spider webs have to be dismantled from behind the couch which seems to be their favorite hangout for some reason!). This time of year is simply charming!

As I took to the road Saturday to check out our neighbors to the north at the Marysville Farmers Market I wanted to challenge each of you to a task. If you wish we sold something on our market site, please let us know. Our vendors are very supportive of helping all of us with solutions to our search for good options. Even better, if you experience something from a vendor at another market that has something we do not, please tell them about our market. We are always excited to add different and delicious finds! Also, if you enjoy the market please share our story! We can always reward our vendors with more opportunities if we have a strong base of customers for them!

Happy Monday everyone and enjoy the beautiful leaves as they change, fall and crunch under foot!

Order up!

Thanks go to Pam for an awesome market tonight! All is well in local food land and we can’t thank our wonderful customers and vendors enough! Have a great weekend and please, if you enjoy shopping with us, tell a friend, neighbor, teacher or anyone else how easy it is to shop with us! The more customers, the more diversity we can add with vendors! Share the news and be sure to like us on Facebook!

Happy Labor Day!

Just a quick note to wish you an early “Happy Labor Day”! If you or your family is anything like our abode here, there will still be plenty of “labor” in your free day! I hope it is a grand day full of fun, family or frolic. We’ll too give you the day off but just be sure to place your orders by Tuesday eve!
