The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:
Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Some sad news...
I am so sorry to report that our market has lost a special friend as Kay Charles, grandmother of Bishop Sanders, has passed away. For those of you that know Bishop, perhaps our youngest vendor and grandson to all the regulars of the Champaign County Farmers Market, you know how important his grandparents are to him. They gardened together with Kay processing tomatoes by the bushel. Her smile and optimism were contagious. Bishop clearly exhibits many of her traits. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bishop and his entire family. She will certainly be missed.
For those wishing to send a note of sympathy, I believe his address is 906 Wooddale Drive, Urbana, OH. 43078. Thanks to both Pam and Charlene for letting us know.
Updates at the market...
In a few weeks, you will notice a change in the payment process of orders. You will soon be paying for your items at the front desk of the Y and not at our table. The process will only change slightly but it should allow streamlining a bit. You will still come first to our checkout table but will take your invoice to the front desk after we have checked your items against your invoice. Any recipts for credit card payments can be returned to our table to tally all sales. The Y is getting new software which will allow you to pay directly to them. I believe we are two weeks away from this happening based on when they will roll-out their new software. Exciting times and we thank the Y for suggesting this assistance! I will clarify which methods of payment will be accepted, but my guess is more options will be allowed! Stay tuned!
Don’t forget the market is open at http://Champaignoh.locallygrown.net!
Good morning everyone!
Just a reminder that the market is open for business!
Sorry to interrupt your day but I wanted to check to make sure our hyacinth customers this week were ok with those being in bloom for Easter. I didn’t put that in their listing and apologize as I was not aware the buds will be tight now but not actually blooming until Easter. If that is a problem, please let me know and I can change the orders. So sorry!
Wrapping it up!
Many thanks to the familiar faces we saw at Urbana University for the viewing of the Economics of Happiness last night. It was a great discussion too about our local foods scene. With the risk of leaving someone out, I’ll try to thank some of you for your overwhelming support in our community: Charlene and Joe Stapleton, Lonny LeFever, Ardell Price, Gary Schenkel, Marilyn Welker, Janet Ward and many others who were present to kick start our lives. Thanks to each of you! We even had some wonderful customers there! Thanks guys!
Just a reminder to get your orders in soon as the market closes tonight. I will leave it open for a few extra minutes as I have a meeting and will try to avoid “texting” during the discussion. It usually wraps up before 8 but don’t worry if I close it around 8:15 pm.
Here’s hoping you don’t blow away! Bundle up and thanks to everyone who already ordered this week! See you Thursday!
There is still time to fill out the survey on local foods. Please help a local friend with some research on our shopping habits. I promise it will only take a minute.

She would greatly appreciate the support as would we!
