The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Special day to all!

Happy Inauguration Weekend! This week’s specials are awesome! Oakview Farm Fresh Meats are offering a super deal on smoked bone-in ham in one or two slice packages. Get your scalloped potatoes ready to sideline with it!

A second deal also goes out to our bread-heads… Cosmic Charlie’s Whole Wheat Apple is a super deal at only $3! If you have yet to partake in her groovy offerings, Pam will not disappoint! Fresh is best and it certainly is that! Yummo!

Have a great week!

Pop goes the kettle!

I just had to write to tell you how much I am loving this Kettle Corn from Rue Farms. Sitting here working on paperwork, I have devoured handful after handful! It is wonderful! It is so portable I am taking it with me this weekend on a bus trip! We’ll see how many miles it lasts!

I also sampled their caramels, truffles and toffee bars which are all awesome too! My hat is off to our newest vendors, Matt and Jeanne Rue! We are loving you already! Thank you for vending with us!

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who placed orders this week! We’ll see you Thursday!

Some serious specials!

Wow have our vendors been crazy! They’ve gone pure wild offering specials this week! So here they are…Oakview Farm-Fresh Meats is offering Pork (sausage) Ground Pork Patties for $2.50 per package of 4 patties. Spice these babies up with some herbs like Swisher Hill’s Southwest Seasoning Mix or JC Grower’s Garlic Powder. Wowweee, does that sound like a great deal and I can smell dinner now!

For our second special, spice up your life by trying some Apple or Pumpkin Pie Spice in jars or refills from Swisher Hill Herbs: Regularly priced at $2.75 per jar or $2.25 for the refill. This week only $2.25/jar and refills for $1.75. This special smells delicious!

Lastly but not least, is the Cosmic Explosion of a worldly deal from Cosmic Charlie…her Cosmic Plain French and Whole Wheat Baguettes are a sky-falling $3 each. Amazing!

The missing glove...

Good evening market shoppers! A brief note of thanks to our wonderful volunteers tonight who packed your orders with a smile: Charlene, Mark and Pam (along with Meyer which I include because he is so charming!) We couldn’t do it without you guys!

There was a black glove with leather accents found at the check-in table tonight. It is at the front desk of the Y in case you have dropped it at the market.

Many thanks also to Craig Shirk from the Urbana Daily Citizen who is writing a feature story on the virtual market for their sister paper, Acres, which is circulated to at least 5 counties to homes with five acres or more. It primarily has a focus on rural living and agriculturally related stories. We’ll fit right in the pages and hopefully will show up in the February copy. We’ll share the news when it does! Have a great Friday and thanks again for your support!

Act fast!

Just a reminder that the market closes tonight at 8! Get your orders in now before that clock strikes 8! Happy New Year’s Day and we’ll see you Thursday!
