The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Happy Independence Day!

I write to you tonight hoping your day was extra-ordinary and full of family, friends, or restful relaxation! However you wish to have spent it, I hope it fulfilled your expectations!

The market is once again open for business! May you find something new and something old to please your taste buds! Have a great week and thanks to our special helpers for helping to make it happen! Thanks to Pam and Charlene for pitching in again this week to handle the behind-the-scene activities!

A special shout-out too to our vendors who set up in Urbana from 9-1 on Saturday or even those who set up at the flea market at the fairgrounds the first weekend of each month. Stop out and see them as we’ll as our friends in St. Paris tomorrow afternoon around 2:30! There are many opportunities to find your local vendors around the county!

Here’s hoping to see you Thursday! Be safe and enjoy the rest of your Fourth!

State of the Plate Reminder

Good afternoon everyone! Just another reminder to mark your calendar for July 20 from 5:30-7:30 for the State of the Plate: a conversation about local foods. We will be featuring our keynote speaker Leslie Schaller from the commercial/shared-use kitchen in Athens, OH. She will inspire us for sure! A locally- sourced meal from Amy Forrest of In Good Taste Catering will be served with a fee of $10. Appetizers and mingling with local providers will kick off our event followed by dinner and our speaker!
Please let me know if you would like a ticket as we would love to have you there! A limited number of tickets are available and the event will take place at the Champaign County Community Center. Have a great weekend and Fourth of July!

What a night!

Oh what a night! Can you just say perfection? I can’t thank those loyal volunteers Pam and Charlene enough for all the work to make a perfect market tonight! Thanks ladies! Due to the holiday, we won’t be open this week but we will be missing each of you and looking forward til we get together again! Buy something local over our break and please support a restaurant that supports local. Until next time!

Last call!

Hello everybody…15 minute warning folks! Just to let you know…

Market update!

Good evening customers! Just a quick but important announcement for everyone. Due to the Y being closed for the July 4th holiday, the market WILL NOT be open NEXT WEEK. While this has no bearing on our market this week, I am letting you know in order to shop for those much needed sauces, grilling meats, extra yogurt and so forth that you might need for those holiday meals. I will close the market tomorrow night at 8 pm and we will see everyone this Thursday as usual. However I will reopen it on Thursday July 4th to allow orders once again. If you find yourself needing an item from one of our vendors in the mean time, feel free to contact them directly or see if they vend at the Mechanicsburg market on Tuesdays, the North Lewisburg market on Thursdays, the St. Paris market on Fridays or the Urbana market on Saturdays. Many vend at the other markets and one of our goals is to help connect you to each of them! Thank you for your continued support of our market and our community!

A special special from Swisher Hill Herbs!

Charlene and Joe send this special news to you! "We have been experimenting with various bar-be-cue recipes to use during the week of the 4th when our son and his family come to visit. Well we have come up with what Charlene and I both think are real winners for pulled pork including homemade barbecue sauce, and a zesty red and green Cole Slaw. We have added the recipes to the locally grown data base, and in addition to our Sweet & Zesty Rub, to ensure everyone who wants to can try them we have added the following herbs and spices to product list.

Make your own Spiced Apple Mint Vinegar packet.
Ground Yellow Mustard
Whole Celery Seed"

Be sure to check out their blends!

Have a great Sunny Sunday! Happy Summer and know the market awaits you!
