The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Good evening crazy critters!

This post expired on December 11, 2023.

As I tromped through the snow to the chicken coop tonight just past dark, the wind was raw and my nerves were shot from an extra strenuous day above our normal level of crazy. I got to thinking about my troubles, which really are zilch, and thought about those pioneer women making the same trip to gather eggs, milk the cow, and more, all without the common conveniences of electricity which keep waterers from freezing and more. This is a time of year that makes me question how our lives have evolved over generations and yet how some things never change. A few minutes later I was thankful to take off my muck boots and get inside, three eggs in tow.

To get closer to your pioneer heritage, why not find something from our market that is homemade, handcrafted, made like it used to be (maple syrup comes to mind!) and more! I’ll keep the market open for a few more minutes but hurry! It is Tuesday and your last chance to order this week!

Be safe, stay home if you can, hug your loved ones, stay warm and shop locally today and every day!
