What you don’t want to miss is the asparagus!! It’s that time of year!! We welcome Beth back to the market but remember, the season is fleeting for asparagus, so you need to take advantage!

Late Night

Sorry for the late opening of the market this week. This is Mark ,your assistant manager. Your manager,The Hippie has been busy preparing for an event tomorrow. The Farmer has been busy too,but forgot to open the market for her. Get your orders in so the Farmer doesn’t get in trouble for a smaller market this week.

This song always seems to kick off the spring season for me. It’s fun, it’s kicky, and it’s a song that we performed in my 7th grade choir, in school, when we had a student teacher in music, that year, who was super cool, and she let us sing all kinds of cool tunes…

The last line also can apply to my recent birthday, on Friday, and the month long birthday celebration of me. I am going to share a writing that I put on my Facebook blog from one of my business pages.

Your market manager went on a personal soul journey, this month…

April has been all about my birthday month…I have taken the month to work hard, but also to take pockets of time to get away for a few adventures, a weekend away with my lovely sorority sisters on our yearly reunion that takes us to various locations.
I have also been so very lucky to have celebrated with some of my nearest, dearest, and life long friends, this month.
I watched my daughter run in a half marathon, this past weekend, and I got teary eyed at the woman she has become, even when she has no idea how totally awesome she really is.
I celebrated myself, all month. My 53rd year was not my best. No clue what was so different, but I felt like I had hit a life change. I was sick for much of the winter. I was going through the motions for most of last year. Everything around me was going very well…my businesses, like in general, but I felt like it was the year of my personal inner struggle. It wasn’t even something that I could put into words. I just was not me. I didn’t broadcast it. I didn’t go around mopey, or talking about what was going on. Simply because I didn’t even know how to explain it.
But, approaching the onset of my 54th year, I started the journey on the first day of the month. I made sure to take time, each day, to celebrate. I celebrated with shopping, I celebrated with alone time, I celebrated by having unloaded some baking jobs, I celebrated by writing, I celebrated by embracing me. My age, my accomplishments, my appearance, my tiny little lines that now dust my face. I celebrated with branching out with new hair with a new, super amazing, and super inspiring girl. I celebrated by letting everyone around me, love me. I took a trip, in my mind, retracing all of my life. The ups, downs, good, bad, happy, sad….I took time to reflect on the people in my life who inspire me, and have been with me, no matter what.
I have said goodbye to the year of the negative 53. I have said hello to the very vibrant, energetic, and possibility filled year of 54…
Life I love you…all is groovy…

I felt like this awakening is also relevant to this little local market of love…each spring, I feel a rebirth in this market. The sunshine, the warm weather, the beginning of new growth in gardens, the blossoming of flowers…it all begins to unfold, awaken, and come alive. Much like the personal journey that took me out of my 53rd doldrums…

So, with this…I did want to announce that one of our newest vendors is now live, and full of color with her floral offerings that have come early to her garden!!

Make yourself feel groovy…

Wednesday Comes Calling

Such a fog filled, drizzly, dreary morning…I’m nestled at my desk with coffee, Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks album spinning, and working on my own ordering for the market.

It’s the perfect time to groove in, and throw us some love…

Maple Syrup Education

Hello, little local market of love customers!! Tonight’s weblog is brought to you from Valley View Farms, and what we can expect from their recent run for sap!!

Dear maple syrup lovers,

We would like to update everyone on our maple syrup season that ended recently. As you know, the weather has been very volatile this spring! We tapped our sugar maples on February 13, which is just about a normal date for us. After a good quick sap run, warm weather shut off our taps for several days, and a forecast of a lengthy warm spell did not bode well. For a good sap run, maple trees need freezing nights and warm days. Without either one, sap doesn’t run. By early March, we had produced only a small amount of syrup, and it looked like our season would be a bust. Of course, temperatures turned cold again—very cold. March was actually colder than February! But as temperatures warmed gradually our trees cooperated and we had some great runs late in the month. Our season was saved and our syrup production was just about at the level for an average year.

Normally, early season syrup is very light colored and delicately flavored. As the season progresses and temperatures rise, the syrup darkens and turns more robust. This year, our first syrup was dark, robust, and delicious. The later cold spell actually created lighter syrup—a beautiful amber, but not light enough for us to call it golden. So for sale on the market this year, we have amber and dark syrup in our usual glass bottles, which allow the beauty of the syrup to be seen. This year for the first time we also are offering on the market a limited number of quarts of syrup in traditional plastic jugs. We are happy to satisfy our customers who are asking for larger volumes of syrup.

Pancakes, waffles, ice cream, yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, sauces, cocktails, pies—Valley View Woodlands maple syrup is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face!

The Warming Trend

Could it be that we are finally going to inch our way into spring? Even though I woke up to snow flurries, and ice on my car, the day became full of sunshine with a hint of warmth…fingers crossed that we are on the upswing!!

Thank you, to all, who ordered from the market, this week, as well as all of you who order from our market, regularly.

Also, I was sorry to miss everyone at the market pick up, this evening, but thank you for helping Mark keep it all in line.

I left early to begin packing for a sorority trip, this weekend! I will be heading south, to my Kentucky alma mater, for fun, sisterhood, and laughs…

While I am gone, I want to see everyone ordering!! We have some eggs added back to the market from Oakview Farm Meats, and we welcome a new egg vendor from Ladybug Farms!!

I will see you when I return from my weekend of fun…let’s hope we are on a warming trend, and let’s continue the great momentum of this market!!
