The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

The Candyman

Who can take tomorrow (who can take tomorrow)
Dip it in a dream (dip it in a dream)
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream
The Candy Man (the Candy Man)
The Candy Man can (the Candy Man can)
The Candy Man can
’Cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good (makes the world taste good)…Sammy Davis, Jr.

So, tonight, like every Thursday night, I leave the market, retreat to my house, and back deck, pour a glass of wine, and take in the evening sky and sunset.

I love the market, so much, and all of you, and after I wave my last goodbye, I put the market to bed, and slip into my bubble of time.

Tonight, the sunset was amazing! It reminded me of the candy counters of my youth, and it brought the biggest nostalgia vibe to me. This song popped into my head, and it made me smile, and think of the love of this market.

I am reopening for the week, and we welcome you back for another week of fun!

The Candyman can…and, so can we!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Heart Of Gold

I want to live
I want to give
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold
It’s these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold…
(Neil Young-Song Implant-Customer Dena)

And, well, this market and the customers, along with the vendors, are so much the hearts of gold.

Thank you, once again, for a fantastic week of orders!! You love us, and we love you!

Tomorrow, my father is back in the house to help your other market manager, Mark, in the greenhouse, so that means, lets get crazy, and have no time slots!

From 4pm-6pm…come show me some love…and music…and, your heart of gold…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

You've Got A Friend

Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you’ve got to do is call
And I’ll be there…
(James Taylor)

Song Implant from customer: Susan Schuster

Last week, at market pick up, Susan pulled up, as usual, smiling, as always, but admitting to having a bit of a time, on her drive into the market. She told me that this song came to mind, because of how she had been feeling on the drive.

And, what better song to fall back on when we all have those little melt downs, those cloudy days, those sad tears that sometimes need to fall?

James Taylor is one of my favorites, and I’ve been humming this song, ever since Susan’s market pick up.

I hope that this market is that friend, to you, for whatever you need, whenever you need it. I hope that we have helped to ease things for all of you, ever since March.

I feel like each week, we all, collectively, as a little united market front, are able to absorb and pass through yet another week of information overload, fear, unrest, and need for comfort.

Today is Tuesday, market customers, and we close for the week, this evening, at 8pm.

Let us be the friend, who gets you through another week…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Sunday Song Implant

Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying’s not for me
‘Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I’m free, ‘cause nothing’s worrying me…
(Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head-BJ Thomas)
Song implant from customer: Kathleen Smith

I loved market pick up on Thursday, with the total rainfall (because, well, we NEEDED it) and, delivering Kathleen’s order to her trunk, she yelled out this song. So perfect, and I hummed it to myself, the rest of the night…

And, so perfect for this morning, on this raindrop kind of day. The kind of day perfect for sitting and ordering. The kind of day that is perfect for your market manager to stay put, spin some tunes, and get organized in all areas of her life…lol.

The past few months have been crazy, and little by little, a bit of catering has come back into play, along with this crazy busy market, and then Hippie and the Farmer weekend events at the farm. So, with all the busy, also finds your manager with all of her vintage bags, filled with paperwork, lip glosses, torn pieces of paper with notes to myself, missing two of my French silk scarves, reservations for the weekend events, and the list goes on.

These kind of days are perfect for emptying all of them out, pitching what I no longer need, and reorganize my life.

When I spend a productive Sunday, my weeks are then a breeze. Don’t get me wrong…Sundays spent sipping mimosas, all morning, are my real favorite but then my weeks reflect that. A big mimosa mess…lol.

Anyway, while the raindrops are needed, outside, raindrops are also needed to reorganize, prioritize, and get my life all moving right along…

Also, I love all of your song implants, and keep a list with each of you, and your songs, so that each can appear in a weblog…I love them, so much, and each one makes me smile.

I’m off to get my market orders in…my first raindrop task to accomplish!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Mandolin Wind

When the rain came I thought you’d leave
‘Cause I knew how much you loved the sun
But you chose to stay, stay and keep me warm
Through the darkest nights I’ve ever known
If the mandolin wind couldn’t change a thing
Then I know I love ya…
(Rod Stewart)

So much love for this song, for this album, for the pure pleasure of just sitting and letting the groove take over.

Aww, and the rain line, well, it was definitely a rain soaked market, this evening, but you all just smiled, and chatted, and spoke of appreciation of the market, of the little market sisterhood/brotherhood, and hoping that we would keep on keeping on.

No worries…this market is deep in my soul. Just like the music that I hold dear, this is my passion, and you, my lovelies, are so very important…all of you.

I’ve been on a Rod Stewart kick, lately. A Faces kick, lately, and I have flipped through my old collection of Rod Stewart albums. Like going home, again, and to borrow the title from this particular album, Every Picture Tells A Story…no words have ever been truer.

When I think of home in my soul, comfort in my heart, a feeling of peace and gratitude, this is my music. Spinning this vinyl, back in the day, is now spinning the vinyl in the here and now.

When I think of this market, and all of your sweet words, sweet messages, kindness, it’s like revisiting an old song, a long ago time, where it was just people helping people, and sharing the love.

I hope that this market brings to you the same peace, comfort, and soul happiness, as does an old song, an old feeling.

Tonight, I first would like to thank all of you for tossing out your song suggestions! They will all appear in my weblogs, this week. Thank you for your smiling faces, and your warmth. Thank you for giving me the gift of music via cds for me to listen to. And, thank you for sharing your Thursday early evenings with the market, and myself…

As I open the market, I want to let you all know that our friends at Freshwater Farms have been able to regroup, and get their production all caught up, and are able to now list all of your favorite products! We welcome them back…

And, as fellow producers, I would be lying if I didn’t say that in one way or another, we have been hit hard, since March. But, the struggles of us all, have landed here, and I am hopeful that I have been able to continue to steer the ship, while we all tried to keep calm waters.

Also, I am off of vacation mode, and am ready to bake for you! I spent the week planning for an event, tomorrow, and then I am all yours, again…

No mandolin wind couldn’t change a thing…

Go play some old school Rod Stewart…and, get your orders in while you groove the groove…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Happy

I need a love to keep me happy…
(The Rolling Stones)

This market, the customers, and the vendors are that love that keeps me happy!!

I’ve been on a heavy Stones replay, this week, revisiting all of my albums, and when I saw the market numbers, last night, at closing, this song happened to be spinning, and well, what better way to say…Happy?!

Thank you, kindly, for the love this week!! The market, once again, just blew me away!!

As I mentioned, we will be one man down, tomorrow, as my father will be elsewhere! So, we are breaking the market into two time slots!

A-H…4-5:00pm

J-Z…5-6:00pm

If you requested a Friday, pick up, I have noted it.

If you need to check your cards for possible expiration dates, you can phone me today, and tomorrow, with any updated info.

If you are paying by check…make it out to Oakview Farm Meats.

Cash? Ziplock bag with your name!

If you have ordered from a previous week, and have not paid, or picked up…that kind of housekeeping needs to be taken care of! When you order from the market, and the vendors are paid for the products that you ordered, and then you do not pick up or pay…what happens? The market is without your payment, and down for the sales that are are not paid for. SO…moving forward…if this continues, we will probably need a credit/debit card from all new customers who are not yet established with the market.

Thank you for understanding…

So, again…you all make so happy!!

And…throw me your songs, tomorrow, at pick up! I love knowing your musical insights!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Build Me Up, Buttercup

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don’t break my heart

“I’ll be over at ten”, you told me time and again
But you’re late, I wait around and then (bah-dah-dah)
I went to the door, I can’t take any more
It’s not you, you let me down again

(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time and I’ll make you mine
(Hey, hey, hey!) I’ll be home
I’ll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don’t break my heart

You were my toy but I could be the boy you adore
If you’d just let me know (bah-dah-dah)
Although you’re untrue, I’m attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so

I-I-I need you-oo-oo more than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don’t break my heart…

Song implant from market customer: Kathleen Smith

Kathleen always arrives, windows down, music playing, smiling, and giving me song titles…she is always so positive and upbeat, like all of our customers, and is one of the markets biggest cheerleaders.

This song fits her personality…very bubbly, very dance like…

A perfect market song, for a perfect Tuesday of finishing up your market orders…

The market does close, this evening, at 8pm, and I love seeing all of your happy, dancing orders, coming through my email.

Again, my baking is on hold for the week, getting ready for a Friday event, but I will be there, front and center, to greet you, and send you on your way, Thursday!

Depending on the size of the market, will determine if we will need time slots, this week. We are going to be down a worker, my father, who needs to be elsewhere, so we may need the time slots so as to not make you all wait, too long…but, I will announce that, tomorrow!

Alright all of you, lovelies…go ahead, build me up (with orders), Buttercup…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Sunday Strings

I never saw it coming, plain as could be
Rollin’ like the thunder, crashing like the sea
Like a lonesome whistle blowing, dancing in a dream
The sound of your heart calling, my favorite melody

You’re my earthquake, the sweetest heartache
You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul

You take my breath away, you know just what to say
You shake me down to my soul, you’re my earthquake

I’ve seen the highest of the highs and lowest of lows
Stood up on the mountain, traveled down a broken road
Like a wild wind a-howling, you shook me to the ground
Tearing down the shadows, shining through the clouds

You’re my earthquake, the sweetest heartache
You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul
You take my breath away, you know just what to say
You shake me down to my soul, you’re my earthquake

There’s a beauty in this world, it can break your heart in two
But there’s no other way to say, you know just what to do

You’re my earthquake, the sweetest heartache
You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul
You take my breath away, you know just what to say
You shake me down to my soul, you’re my earthquake…
(Earthquake-The Black Lillies)

Song Implant from market customers…William and Teresa O’Hair

I love being turned on to music and groups that I am not familiar with. Last Thursday, at market pick up, William and Teresa pulled up in their beautiful vintage sports car, and not only handed me a print out of their favorite song, but also a cd that they had burned, for me, of an entire album of the Black Lillies.

As per usual, on a Thursday, after the busy market, I jump into my own car, turn up music, and let my mind go blank for the drive to my house. I popped their cd in, and immediately was in love with this group. The strings, the vocals, this song that they picked.

But, what I was most in love with was the generosity and kindness that seems to be the underlying of this market, it’s customers, and it’s vendors. This little community that we seem to have built, each and every week, since moving the market. So, this beautiful song that they chose, also represents the beauty that I find in this market, and in all of your faces, each week.

I adore that you all bond with the market, and I love that you all show up, songs in hand, or songs that you email to me, or even songs that you just tell me about.

Life is beautiful, made even more so, by the music that you hear, in my opinion.

So, on this Sunday, why not seek out some music from The Black Lillies, enjoy, and use it for the backdrop to your ordering…

You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul…could not describe my feelings, any better, for this market family…

Have a peaceful and love filled Sunday!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
