The Weblog
The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:
Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

So, as I posted last night, we have just this week’s market to get Thanksgiving orders in because we will not be around for next week’s market since it will be closed for that day. Order this week, for all needs.
We also understand that you may need some items as fresh as possible right before the big day. You can always make arrangements with individual vendors to get with them, next week, for last minute needs. We just will not be setting up through the market, next week.
One of those vendors would be me, Cosmic Charlie. If you would like dinner rolls, breads, breakfast items for next week’s holiday weekend, you can place your orders via my email, and can then pick them all up from my shop, downtown Urbana, all day on next Tuesday. Another thing to keep in mind, my items all freeze beautifully…if you order this week, you can successfully freeze, thaw, gently warm, serve, for next week…
Thanksgiving is the holiday that is my favorite but also the most hectic, as I am sure it is for everyone. As you all have read my Weblogs, you know that I have lived all over, spent a whole lot of my life living on my own, and carving out a circle of family through my friends, in every city and all during college.
One of my favorite times was Thanksgiving. Especially in cities where I had no family, just friends who were also floating along, and we would gather, with everyone adding their own special touch to the day. There would be baking, cooking, turkeys and hams in the oven, scented air with candles and cooking yumminess. Lots of bottles of wine, champagne to toast with when none of us had much money, back then, but we still made sure to splurge on holiday fun and fare. Good times, with good food, and the best of friends around the makeshift tables. Is it weird to miss those days? To think of all the friendships I have been lucky enough to be a part of? Simple, basic times made super amazing just by special touches.
This market can do that for you. I always like to call this the little market of love because to me, it represents what I came from. Friendship, friends who loved, food that was simple and delicious, food that back then, was still of the local/natural/raw state. Affordability was key, good flavor a must, and nutrition was there because it was real food.
Let us put our own market love into your Thanksgiving…we offer flours, cheeses, dairy, eggs, herbs, spices, jams, jellies, glazes, garlic, honey, maple syrup, sorghum, popcorn for snacking, greens, lettuces, potatoes, top quality, locally raised meats, breads, candles to scent your entire house for guests, and soaps for your guest rooms an baths.
Swisher Hill Herbs is still running a special on their Thanksgiving spices, but you will also need to stock up on all herbs and spices to flavor and blend.
Oakview Farm Meats can direct you with any meat questions. They also have their own shop front where you can stop in, next week, for any last minute needs.
Together, we can get this dinner, holiday, off the ground for you! With local love, with a smile, and with ease…let us put the love in your day…
Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

An ELM TREE ESSENTIALS kind of Holiday!
I’m so excited to actually list our soap gift sets on the virtual market this year! Last year the response to them blew us away…we were amazed at how quickly they sold…and they never made it to virtual market! We offer two different sets, each containing 5 half-size bars. Holiday Set: Peppermint, Holiday Spice, O Christmas Tree, Sweet Orange Clove, and Frankincense & Myrrh
Fabulous 5 Set: Lemongrass, Tea Tree Lavender, Peppermint, Pink Grapefruit, and Sweet Orange Clove
(As always, we use food grade, organic base oils and only essential oils for the scents…absolutely NO synthetic fragrances.)
They are a great sampler pack and make wonderful gifts for teachers, co-workers, friends, family and even yourself! Everyone needs soap! Have someone on your list who ‘has everything’ and you’re stumped as to what to get for them? These gift sets are the perfect solution!
Can’t wait to fill your orders!!!
Have a blessed week,
Laura Miller {ELM Tree Essentials}

Cosmic Shop Tour!
Good evening, little local market of love customers!!
As you know, we very often promote our farm tours of our vendors, special offers, special events.
Now, it’s your market manager’s turn to host a tour. In my shop. Right in downtown Urbana!
In case you didn’t know, I have my Cosmic shop right in the square, on Scioto Street. This weekend, is the downtown’s annual Holiday Open House. This means that the downtown will have extended shopping days, holiday fun in each shop, the eateries will all be open, late, and most every business will also be open on Sunday!
And, let me stop, here, to give a bit of background, and, or a day in the life of your market manager.
I am the owner/baker of Cosmic Charlie Bread. I have entered into my 7th season as Cosmic Charlie. Along with this business, I rock another business which is named, Girl With Far Away Eyes. This is my fashion side of things that offers a mix of vintage, retro, and hippie inspired clothing. I have had my clothing shop for over 5 years. I got my start as a little pop up fashion shop, all around downtown Urbana.
In the midst of building both of my businesses, I became involved in downtown activities which led to my seat on the board of Monument Square District. In the beginning, I was a board member, then I stepped up to the executive secretary position.
My term with that position came to an end but I remain on the board. I am now a co-chairperson of Art Affair On The Square, chairperson of Santa Land/Santa’s Homecoming, promotions coordinator for Holiday Open House, AND, I serve as one of the chairs of the Christmas Gala. I am in charge of the cocktails and bar part of that evening’s event.
And, you already know me as your market manager, here, but I also am the market manager of the Mechanicsburg Farmers and Artisans market, and serve as a member on the Local Foods Council. I also bake breads for area restaurants such as The Depot Coffeehouse, Café Paradiso, Mad River Farm Market, and Seasons Bistro and Grille, in downtown Springfield.
I am a full season vendor at the Springfield Farmer’s Market, and the first Cosmic shop was housed in downtown Springfield.
Now that you have that background, I am happy to announce that I am finally getting around to having a ribbon cutting/open house/grand tour/First Friday Coffee Hour of my shop. The Cosmic Breads and Threads shop where I house both of my businesses!!
The fun begins at 7:30am, Friday, November 6th, for the coffee hour. Then, join me, for my ribbon cutting of the Cosmic tie-dye ribbon at 9am!! After that, it will be an entire weekend of fun as we kick off the downtown Holiday Open House!!
In the Cosmic shop, you will also find products from other local vendors, from this market, such as Oakview Farm Meats, Swisher Hill Herbs, ELM Tree Essentials, Valley View Woodlands, Champaign Berry Farm, Honey Boy Honey, JC Growers and Bad Seed Mustard!!
Food will be available from local meat producer, Oakview Farm Meats, in conjunction with Cosmic Charlie!
There will be shopping, cocktails, vintage and hippie clothing, a live performance by Jamie Karg as he brings his guitar, and music, Friday evening, and surprise models…you will need to look to see if you can find them…
It’s going to be real good time, it’s the biggest shopping event of the season, right downtown, in your own hometown!
I invite all you to come out, come to the ribbon cutting, or come at some point, during the weekend…
I urge you to make the scene…
And, with that, I remind you that there is just a little over an hour left to order from the market, tonight. I will close it all down at 10pm…go, order, get your weekly shopping done.
Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

He's Gone
Like a steam locomotive, rolling down the track…
He’s gone…gone, and nothings gonna bring him back…he’s gone.
(He’s Gone-Grateful Dead)
Well, tonight was the kick off show, in Albany, New York, of The Dead and Co. tour. One of my best friends from the West End is there, showing his love, having a real good time.
This song, this verse, and this tour reminds me so much of this little local market of love. We just keep rolling along, making our way, endless hours of work, mega amounts of customers who help make this market what it is, and the love that we feel from the customers, each and every week.
Just like Dead and Co. we keep on rolling…we keep on rockin’. Show us YOUR love, this week, by checking us out, getting to know us, putting an order in, getting to know us, once again…we promise…it will be a real good time!
I open the market, tonight, so that you can begin to plan for the upcoming week.
As always, we know that you have a choice in your shopping venues, but we are super excited that you put your trust in us…
Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
