The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

It's A Beautiful Day!!

So, I have been having trouble with this Weblog publishing, the past few days. I lost a profound Mother’s Day blog post, a post about kickin’ around, feeling groovy, and a post about this time of year/life changes/some of my insights…

So, once again, in hopes of a blog going through the system, here I go…

It’s a beautiful (windy), sunshine kind of day. The kind of day that makes you smile, makes you thing of only good things and good thoughts…which should make you think of this little local market of love, the good things that come from it, the good things it stands for, and the beautiful way it brings us all together, where local blends with local to make local goodness.

The market will be open all day, and will close this evening, at 10pm. Don’t forget that we have very seasonal items, right now, to take advantage of!! Spring garlic, asparagus, fresh herbs…all are very, very time/season sensitive. Get those products ordered, pronto!!

I will check in, all day, on orders. Make me happy, make me smile, make it a beautiful day at our little local market of love!!

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

Love Is All You Need!

There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known…
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown…
There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be…
It’s easy…

(All You Need Is Love- The Beatles)

Tonight was a great market night! Like so many market nights, tonight just came together with vendors, customers, the YMCA, my assistants…

One big team, lots of laughs, lots of fun, lots of local goodness!!

I would like to thank so many of the vendors, and customers, who take the time to send special little messages with their orders, or emails as a vendor. Your kind words to us, and your appreciation, are why we do what we do, each and every week! You are important to us, this market is important to us, and the local goodness/scene/vibe are important to us!!

Get on board with the love…the love of local, the love of keeping it real, and the love of this little local market! We thank each of you…

I am opening the market for another week of fun!! We look forward to showing you another week of love, local, and fun…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

Feelin' Groovy...

Slow down, you move too fast…
You got to make the morning last…
Just kicking down the cobble stones…
Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy…
Feelin’ groovy…
(Simon And Garfunkel – The 59th Street Bridge Song (feelin’ Groovy)

Today was one of those groovy kind of days! One of those days where the sidewalks were all alive, my shop neighbor and I were laughing on our back porches, friends were coming and going, it was warm, customers were buzzing in, and the sunshine just made you happy. So, let’s continue this groovy feeling at our little local market of love…

Have A Little Faith In Me

You know time, time is our friend…
Have a little faith in me…
(Joe Cocker – Have A Little Faith In Me)

Well, have faith in this market, have faith that we strive to continue to bring you the best of the best, and have faith that this little local market of love continues to grow, build, add, and groove into what is going on it’s fourth year in operation!!

Yes, that’s right…we continue with the original vision, the original hope, and the original growth plan!! Your three market managers, myself, Mark, and Charlene, have been a part of this market since before it even opened it’s doors. We are some of your original vendors. We began volunteering with the market in the late spring and early summer of that first year. The three of us were the among the first faces that helped run the onsite location. We then stepped into what would become the management team both onsite, and behind the scenes, that you have grown to know and love!! We watched the market begin with the bare bones of a working market. Each year, we watched the numbers of customers, vendors, sales, all climb. We became a solid market. We became a permanent fixture at the YMCA. We got shiny new equipment. We have become a community name. We are now the market umbrella that encompasses all area farmers markets.

We are the faces, the vendors, the products that you put your faith in, each week. You are the faces, the customers, the sales, that we have faith in seeing, each week.

It took all of us…the circle that makes up this community, the circle that is this little local market of love…to make us the little powerhouse that we are, today!!

Have a little faith? Yes…it’s what this market was built on.

It’s Tuesday…the market will close, tonight, at 10pm! Get your orders in!! Don’t forget to take advantage of the short season that is asparagus!! Beth, of Harrigan’s Harvest emailed me that her crop is crazy growing and over the sad freeze of last week!!

Make me happy, show me that faith, place your orders…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

We Are Gonna Be Friends

I can tell that we are gonna be friends…
Yes, I can tell that we are gonna be friends…
(We’re Going To Be Friends- White Stripes)

So many nights, after we close the Thursday portion of the market, I like to kick back, have a nice glass of wine, listen to tunes, and gather my thoughts about the upcoming weekend, the upcoming week, and this market. I always have tunes in the background, wine glass, some sort of dinner groovin’, and many times catching up with friends via Facebook.

Tonight, I got in a bit late, poured a glass of wine, put on some acoustic tunes, and this one popped up. I love the original version of this, I Love when Jack White performs it as a bluegrass, funky acoustic.

Anyway, the story of the lyrics about knowing that the duo with sweet Suzy Lee are going to become the best of friends, makes me think of this little local market of love, the underlying meaning of friendship, of a love for each other, of a lifelong dedication to all that is local. Of a support system of market, vendors, customers, managers, the YMCA…we all come together to bring you such a bond of friendship, of love, that once we all become one with the market, and each other, we cannot let it go.

It’s not just a market. It’s not just about being local. It’s not just about the vendors or the products. It’s a bigger picture. The reason we are all so dedicated, in one way or another.

The trust, the bond, the simplistic lovely friendship of it all. We all share this bond. We are all in this little local market of love…

We are entering into or fourth season. We have grown, we continue to grow, we have no plans on stopping or slowing.

I can tell that we all are gonna be friends. It’s what this market does. It brings us all so close that we are gonna be friends.

I am opening the market, once again, for the upcoming week. Get those orders in! Show us your love, your bond, your friendship…because I can tell that we are gonna be friends…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

The New Mother Nature

She’s gettin’ us all, she’s gettin’ us all…
She’s gettin’ us all, she’s gettin’ us.

(Guess Who – New Mother Nature)

And, so it goes…Mother Nature is getting us down with her very, very cool evening temperatures, all this week.

Which makes for dicey early season produce.

Which makes for sad asparagus.

Which makes for a frantic Beth of Harrigan’s Harvest.

Which leads me to this plea…

If you ordered asparagus, this week, on the market, PLEASE contact Beth, via the Growers tab at this market site!!!!! She had a large portion of it freeze, and is unsure of how many pounds she will be able to cover for tomorrow’s market!!! She would like to make this all right with everyone, and take names, addresses, and deliver the orders, this weekend, or early next week.

Your market managers, and Paul of the YMCA, have already told her to wait on our orders, hoping to free up more pounds for our lovely customers!!!

Let her know, ASAP, if you can wait or if you need it, tomorrow!!!

If you ordered, and will be delayed in getting it, please go ahead, pay for your order, normally, and then she will deliver it, if you are not getting in, tomorrow!! It makes it easy on you, on Beth, on the market, and on our financial officer at the YMCA!!

Thank you so very much for understanding the temperament of Mother Nature….some seasons, she is just a real, well, you know…

Get in touch with Beth!!

Peace, Love, and Good Vibe…
