The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:
Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!
TGIF (Thank Goodness for Food)
Good morning foodies! Just a huge, huge thank you to Cosmic Pam and our super- star guest Charlene for helping with the market last night! All is well in your local food system when such bright and sunny faces can make it all click! Enjoy your weekend and do remember that that ugly word of “frost” will soon change our offerings for many of our vendors. Shop now while we still have some of our more tender-hearted offerings, especially our raspberries. We will say our goodbyes after Jack Frost comes a callin’to some of our favorites.
That doesn’t mean we won’t be full of yummy choices though as many of our vendors are year-round friends. Especially when the other markets close, you can rely on us to deliver! Please spread the word if you know of someone who is looking for a place to shop as we are the only year-round market in the county. We are proud to keep bringing our customers options and our vendors an outlet (the chickens don’t know what month it is anyway, do they?).

Just a quick note that today is Tuesday…you know what that means. Get your orders in by 8 pm tonight for the freshest options around. All items are made, grown, picked, plucked, stirred, baked, harvested, stitched, or created just for you! Where else can you get this personalized care? Enjoy your day!
I wanted to remind everyone about the recipe tab on the market site. I was curious what might be new and found Charlene’s awesome pesto recipe. I love that she substituted the sunflower seeds as my daughter has an allergy to pine nuts. How inventive! Be sure to check out the many ideas directly from the growers who know best how to cook what they make, raise, grow and even better, like to eat!
There are lots of options and once you find a recipe you love, be sure to share it with us! We love to be able to taste the best too! Thank you to all the vendors who have uploaded recipes, both new and old. Happy eating!
Basil, basil and more basil...
I am not sure how I missed one of my favorites, but Fresh Harvest Farm also has added basil this week for us. I do apologize as noone can forget our good friend basil! Enjoy!
Good morning everyone! What a beautiful sunny day we have in front of us! I hope your weekend was restful and at the same time full of exciting fall activities to get us enjoying the season which surrounds us.
I am writing today to mention some new additions to the market. Not only are the products awesome, but the way they are grown is too. Welcome, welcome, welcome to Fresh Harvest Farm who joins us this week from Richwood to our north. Jeni and Doug Blackburn own and operate Fresh Harvest Farm which utilizes aquaponics, a growing method that produces lettuces, kale, celery, swiss chard, basil and more. This growing method uses a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics to produce year-round greens. I am excited to have them join us! Let’s all welcome them with open arms!
Jeni and Doug have been featured in a number of local publications lately and their explosive growth is due to their hard work and inventive personalities. We are so lucky to have them join us so we can have our salad greens, especially this late in the season.
Fresh Harvest has added two kinds of romaine, a butterhead and a variety called concept for us this week. Get your salad tongs ready and order your greens for that weekend get-together or fast and healthy mid-week meal. Top your delicous salad with some of the sweet peppers, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and other options while they last.
If you already ordered this week, no worries. You can always place another order if you wish and both orders will be combined in your market basket when you check out.
