The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Lately It Occurs To Me...

…What a long, strange trip it’s been..(Truckin’, Grateful Dead)

This is the thought that I have had in my head since Friday. About my own Cosmic Charlie adventure and about our little local online market, here. If you stop, and look back at where it all started and the travels to get to this point, it is all just pretty amazing.

I had a chance encounter at the Cosmic shop, Friday. It was almost closing time, I had sold out of breads, early in the day, had just a few Hippie cookies left, and a guy came through the door. We had the usual polite chatter but then went down the Cosmic path of my breads, he was disappointed that I was sold out but did buy all of the Hippie cookies that were in the case.

We continued out conversation…it seems that he heard there was a local bakestress in Springfield, he was impressed that there was now local bread. He lives in the Dayton area, and began telling me his about his baking life, the bakery he was in, and what he is doing now. He helps farm on farms around the outskirts of Dayton that are doing amazing things with just about any produce you can imagine. We had this exchange that was just all about breads, being bakers, and the super cool farms of produce. We talked about so much and it was one of those moments that I was re-inspired. You know how you can go about your life and business and all is well but then, by chance, you stumble on a bit of inspiration that makes you really, really look back on your journey and you get excited and energized all over again?

I told him about this market and I found myself going on and on with pride about what we are doing, the hardships in the beginning, where I would love to see it heading…

Anyway…he went on his way, he had no idea he left me with such excitement, and energy, and a firm belief that my passion is in all things local!!

Local…it’s where it’s at, it’s where it’s headed, it’s what it’s all about! Get your local passion in motion…rediscover your love for us…give us a chance to show you our love for all things local!!

The market is open, we will be here to meet your local needs until we close at 8pm, tomorrow night.

Experience the local vibe…get your orders in…

Turn, Turn, Turn!

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to build up,a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together…(lyrics from The Byrds)

As I open the market, tonight, I find myself looking at the changes in the season, the changes in our local attitude, the changes that come once Easter is upon us, and I find myself turning on the brink of a milestone, as I look at my upcoming birthday, next weekend, the last weekend of April.

My birthday month is a big one, for me…it always is greatly anticipated, greatly celebrated, much excitement! This year, I look at an age that only seemed so distant and yet here it is…the year I am turning 50!

But, I do not mourn the fact or even bemoan the fact. I embrace it! I tell people…I am the new face of 50! Everyone is always asking me what I do to keep myself so young at heart, so vibrant? Well, for one…I love every minute of life!! I grab every opportunity and take it for my own. I love my people!! AND…I embrace local. I embrace the local lifestyle, the local way of eating, the local goodness. If it’s local, I am ALL over it!! That is what excites me so much about our little market, here, at Champaign Locally Grown!!! Just as I am the new face of 50…we are the new face of LOCAL!!!! I look at all that I have experienced and conquered, in my first 50 years…I look at all we have experienced and grown with our local market!! The time is now, the new face of local….my new face of 50!

So…as I open the market, let’s celebrate!! Let’s celebrate this WONDERFUL local market that we are so fortunate to have and let’s celebrate the faces of all ages, the faces of local, and the fact that choosing local foods, knowing your farmer, and knowing where it all comes from, is really the new face of everything!!

Help me celebrate…make me smile with at least ONE order to our market!!! It’s a celebration…let’s make it all happen, locally!!
