The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Shelter From The Storm

‘Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
“Come in,” she said, "I’ll give you shelter from the storm"
(Bob Dylan)

Well, happy early Saturday, and welcome to what sounds like the big snow storm of the past year. Coming our way. Getting everyone into a state of panic.

But, no panic is needed, here. We’ve got it ALL for you! All that you need for the week!! With no hassle, no need to go out and risk the crowds. The best products, given to you with love, and smiles. Our own shelter, to you, from the storm.

And, we also have seen the addition of a few new items, this week…

Chuck Lippincott brings us his new creamed honey! He also spun his magic with a cinnamon creamed honey! I sampled it, last week, and it is sooooo yum!!!

Oakview Farm Meats has added a couple of meat bundles!! Always perfect for stocking your freezer, no matter what the crazy weather is!

And, we say hello to a new vendor, old friend, supporter of the local scene….Ryan Hostetler!! Ryan also had, St. Ives Winery, out in Cable, with his wife, and they have always been total fans of what’s goin’ down in the market, and around.

He brings to us his own dried spice, in two different levels of heat, from his own, carefully cultivated peppers. He brings with his product, his own sense of humor in the names, and if you know him, you will laugh. He did let me sample some of the product, back during one of Hippie and the Farmer’s Pizza Farm Friday events, and I loved it! So, with a big welcome to another great vendor, we welcome Ryan!!

Also, this week will be the last week to order from the January menu of Cosmic soups, and Hippie and the Farmer frozen pizzas, and dinners! I will launch the February menu on Thursday!

I am also adding a few new Cosmic breads that haven’t been around for quite some time…they are some of my Gypsy Breads, and they were quite popular when I was making my rounds at farmers’ markets, in my early Cosmic days…

Ok! Forget the snow storm, and get your shelter, right here…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

How Sweet It Is...

…to be loved by you…

Once again, a HUGE thank you to all who ordered from this week’s market!! You were all so lovely, this evening, at pick up, and even though it was so very cold, you all had smiles on your faces!!

I am getting ready to enjoy my own Cosmic Roasted Tomato soup for dinner, and a lovely glass of wine!

The market is open, again, for orders, and I look forward to the next trivia winner, and all of your orders!

Stay warm…

XOXO,

It's Market Day!!

Good morning, lovely market customers!!

This is just my reminder that today is market pick up day, and you once again blew it all up with such enormous love!!

You may pick up your orders, between 4pm-6pm! If you are a Friday pick up/delivery, I’ve got you on the books! If you need a Friday pick up, please let me know, and you can pick up between 10am-12pm!

If you are new, this week, and there are several of you, you have the option of phoning me, ahead of time, with payment information that I will keep on file for future orders!

If you do not want to pay by card, you can bring a check made out to Oakview Farm Meats, or cash, in a ziplock bag, with your name! Please have exact change because it takes time if I have to leave the line, to make change, and it also takes time if you are handing me your card, in line…thank you, so very much!

Thank you, everyone, who started flooding my email with the answers to this week’s Cosmic Trivia!! We did have a winner!!

Long time market customer, Michelle Poston-Peters!! She and her adorable daughter have been supporters of the market since we opened the doors/internet to the market, 10 years ago!!

The answer to the trivia question was….Madison’s Downtown Cafe, and the second answer was the owner, then, Summer Woodburn, also heads up her own little group of vendors, here on the market, 4 Hens and a Rooster!

Ok…get ready for more exciting trivia, and a chance to win your very own Cosmic product!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Tuesday Love Note

And…your reminder that the market will be closing for weekly orders, this morning, at 8am!

Also…so far, no trivia answers for the week…

My question was what downtown Urbana restaurant did I bake in, and help get off the ground, years ago?? I know you know it…a cute little cafe, and later, I opened up my own shop, right across the street from the cafe…give me your answer for a free Cosmic product of your choice…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Bookends

Time it was
And what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence
A time of confidences…
(Simon and Garfunkel)

Good morning on this very cold, icy morning, little local market customers! I hope you are all warming up with coffee, tea, and staying safe if you need to be out and about.

The weekend was a quiet one for me. I had an afternoon with an old friend, on Saturday, and a long conversation with another long time friend, that evening. I had text messages from other longtime pals. I guess it was my weekend to hold onto connections. Catch up. Laugh, chat, remember…I treasure my friends, so much, and I think from childhood to adulthood, those who have withstood, are like my own bookends. Keeping me together. Grounded. Remembering that no matter who I am, today, I owe so much to all of them in helping to make take the steps on life’s journey.

Maybe that is why this market, and you, the customers, are so very dear to me. You make up a very important part of me, in this last decade. Through this market, I have built businesses, served on boards, committees, fought for the survival of this market, used my loud mouth to get the message out there about local food, the local landscape…building networks, new bonds, new friendships. This market, in these past ten years, has given me a new set of bookends for this chapter. And, yet, maybe just one bookend, because we are still growing, still groovy, and nowhere ready to have the second bookend put into place. We all still have much work to do in our next ten years with the market.

A lot of wordiness on a Monday…but, also, a simple reminder for us all to cherish each chapter. And, the market is open until tomorrow morning, taking this week’s chapter of orders…

I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday.

AND…Thursday is to be very cold, so if you do not want to be out in the cold, we can deliver to you, for a small fee, on Friday!! Keep that in mind…

Have a lovely day…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

April Come She Will

April, comes she will,
When streams are ripe and swelled with rain.
May, she will stay,
Resting in my arms again.

June, she’ll change her tune.
In restless walks she’ll prowl the night.
July, she will fly,
And give no warning to her flight…
(Simon & Garfunkel)

One of my favorite songs from this duo. It’s just so beautiful, and I love the depiction of seasons from early growth to the withering of late autumn. I’ve also always claimed this as my birthday song, since I am an April birthday. And, with the growing season upon us, why not begin listening to these sounds, now? It won’t be long before colors, and fresh produce, fresh flowers, and sun drenched days of warmth will be upon us!

This song also brings in the Cosmic trivia question for the week! And, it’s also a two part question, so there could be a possible two winners, this week!

Way back, around the April/May time frame, I helped get a local restaurant, up and running! I was only there for about two months, but you all knew me there, and flooded in to see what all was happening in there. I was not the owner, just the baker, and now I need you to give me that name of that once downtown local eatery?

And…you get a bonus part of this…the owner of that place, now heads up one of our flock of vendors, on the market! If you can give me her name, you will win!

A two part market trivia question from the Life and Times of Cosmic Charlie…

And, while you are getting your thinking caps on, go ahead and get your weekly orders placed…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Wonderful Market!

Just a huge dose of love, to all of you, who once again ordered from the market, this week!

It was a crazy windy pick up night but it was nice to chat with each of you!

I am opening the market for the week, and then I am off to pour a glass of wine!

Cheers!
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Market Day!

Welcome back to another week of your lovely market pick up!!

As always, you made this a stellar market, once again, and for that, we are all grateful!

You may pick up your orders between 4pm-6pm, this evening!

You also have the option of picking up, tomorrow, at the shop, but PLEASE note…it’s between 10am-12pm, and then the shop closes, so that we can do the Yellow Springs deliveries!! If you have not already alerted me about a Friday pick up, please do so!

You can also pick up on Saturday, at the shop, 10am-4pm…again, please let me know, in advance!

If you are a new customer, you can phone ahead with your card payment, or you can have exact cash, in a ziplock bag with your name, OR, you can have a check ready, and made out to Oakview Farm Meats!

As always…I look so forward to chatting with all of you, this evening, at market pick up!

Sunshine Daydream

Sunshine, daydream, walking in the tall trees
Going where the wind goes
Blooming like a red rose, now come on over sweetly
Ride out singin’, “I got you in the morning sunshine”…
(Grateful Dead)

Good morning, good morning!!

Well, this song is perfect for announcing that it’s rumored we will have some sunshine, today!! Also, when I was young, my mother called me, Mary Sunshine, upon rising because of my very, very dislike of getting up in the mornings. Completely opposite of the adult me. And, I used to sing this to my daughter, in her nursery, when I would get her up in the morning. And, last fun fact…her nursery was decorated in Grateful Dead song verses, one of them being, Sugar Magnolia, with this song, Sunshine Daydream, being one of the verses within Sugar Magnolia. And, at quite a few Dead shows, they would open a set with Sugar Magnolia, work their way all around the songs of that set, and settle back in to end the whole night, with Sunshine Daydream…

Had enough of my sunshine trivia and thoughts??

Okay, also, this serves as your reminder that the market closes for the week in one hour!!! Get your sunshine selves up, get groovy, and get your orders in!!

It’s a great market, again…let’s just blast it with all the sunshine we can!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

59th Street Bridge

Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feeling groovy
Ba da-da da-da da-da, feeling groovy
Hello lamppost, what’cha knowing
I’ve come to watch your flowers growin’
Ain’t you got no rhymes for me?
Doo-ait-n-doo-doo, feeling groovy
Ba da-da da-da da-da, feeling groovy
I got no deeds to do, no promises to keep
I’m dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me
Life, I love you, all is groovy…
(Simon and Garfunkel)

Go ahead…just try to start your morning out with this groovy beat, and watch how happy everything becomes…

Happy Monday, lovely customers of our little local market!! Go ahead, let your orders flow while listening to the different songs that I provide you, right here, on the market. Where it’s not just good food, but also good friendship, good music, and well, also your market manager’s trivia game, each week!

I have to say, your emails were coming fast and furious, yesterday, and I loved that so many of you were playing!!!

We did have a winner who finally came through in the afternoon with their answer…Shary Stadler, of Valley View Woodlands, and also a market customer, shot me the right answer!

Venice Beach was the correct answer to the location of my first apartment when I moved to California!! Venice Beach was a funky place, I lived in a very old school tiny apartment building with a pianist below me who practiced night and day, a group of Chippendales dancers who lived in the building across the street, and practiced their dance moves on the roof of their building, which I was able to view from my terrace. I was near the beach, I was broke, all the darn time, because I was such a junior flight attendant, out there, and a befriended such an eclectic group of pals, and experienced so many west coast lovely vibes. I also befriended a pal who had grandparents with a rent controlled apartment in San Francisco, but were then living in San Diego, so they gave us keys to use it, right in the heart of it all, so we often hopped a plane, and spent the weekends exploring San Francisco.

They were good years in my California life. Adventures, both good and bad.

So, see…with celebrating the market anniversary with my trivia, you also get insight into my journey…

Go, order, and thank you, always, for being a part in paving the way for this market…because like all of our journeys in life, this market has also had it’s own journey…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
