The Weblog
The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:
Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!
Tuesday Love Note
And, your reminder that the market will be closing for it’s weekly ordering, in about 15 minutes!!
We do have one Cosmic Trivia winner with her answer!!! There is still a chance to be the second trivia winner!!! If you were an ordering customer, this week, I will not be baking until tomorrow, so I welcome all guesses up until 8am, tomorrow, even though the market will be closed for ordering.
The first winner is Sarah McHenry with her guess of one of the Grateful Dead songs that I used in my daughter’s nursery. She guessed, Sugar Magnolia, and that was the correct song for one of them. Go, pull up Dead songs, and toss me another guess…it’s all fun!!
Also, get your orders in!! I’m also racing to get my orders in!
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
Cosmic Trivia!
As we have been doing, each week, celebrating all things market, and the coming of the 10th anniversary of the market, I bring you my gift to you…Cosmic Trivia for free Cosmic products to the winner!!
This week…two winners can happen because there are two answers to my question!!
And, you will need to dust off or look up your Grateful Dead song knowledge.
Since the weekend was all about my daughter’s upcoming wedding, I had thoughts about her, young, a baby, and how it seems like just yesterday when I was designing, drawing outlines, and painting the walls and ceiling of her baby nursery.
The theme was pulled from two Grateful Dead songs that I combined for her…
What two songs were used? Each customer can name just one song. You can send your guesses as many times as you like, until I get two winners.
Ok…go, fill your world with Grateful Dead tunes…I’ll be waiting…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
PS…have you seen all of the loveliness of this market’s offerings? We’ve got it all, and it’s all waiting for you…
Monday, Monday
Monday, Monday
Can’t trust that day
Monday, Monday
Sometimes it just turns out that way…
(The Mamas & The Papas)
Well, it’s a Monday, we had the time change giving us more daylight, more sunshine, and I spent last night, with a glass of wine, rewatching, Echo In The Canyon, so I am now in a Mamas and The Papas songfest in my head…
Anyway, I have been scarce on my weblog writings as I took the weekend off to spend time with my daughter who was in Columbus, and we spent the time doing all things wedding planning, tasting, and seeing her finished dress, for the first time. My heart was full as she stepped into it, for the first time, since trying on the sample dress, months ago.
I spent the weekend, void of social media, and void of writing for the market, just to soak up all that was happening, all that is her beauty.
But, as she jetted back to Florida, I am now back in full force, reminding you that it is already Monday, and you have until tomorrow to get those orders in!!
I hope to see all of your smiling faces at Thursday’s pick up, Friday’s pickup/delivery, or Saturday’s pick up…
Monday, Monday…so good to me…
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Cosmic Weekly Trivia Hint 2!
Happy Monday evening!!
Ok…first, this is your Monday evening reminder to get your orders in for the week!!
Second…you all have been trying, so very hard, with all of your trivia guesses, but not one right answer, yet!!
I am throwing out the easiest clue, so the first to answer, will be this week’s winner!!
And…here we go…when the lights went down, and the band took the stage, they tossed out loads of inflated beach balls as they started into their first famous tune!
Remember…only ordering customers!!!
I can hardly wait to see the winner!!
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
Cosmic Trivia Hint!
And, if you can stand another market email from me, I am going to give you a hint to this week’s market Cosmic trivia question!!
Your guesses have been fun to read!! While I have been to so many of the concerts you have guessed, none of the answers have been my first concert!
So…here is a hint!
1977. I was in 7th grade, and our student music teacher arranged a class field trip on a Sunday evening. The band was/is very well known. They began as a fun, frothy, feel good band in the 60s. They hit a turning point with one of their most critically acclaimed albums, and turned their sound into a whole new direction.
I own that amazing album that changed their direction, but on that Sunday evening, in 1977, they were a mix of all their music!! The concert was in a university arena…
Go ahead…and, you must be an ordering customer to win the Cosmic product of your choice!!
XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
Meet Our Growers/Producers!
Happy Monday Morning!!
I have asked all of our vendors to send me a bio about them, their products, their farms, their businesses…I thought it would be nice, now that we are rolling into our 10 year anniversary in May, to introduce all of them!! Some have been with the market since it’s inception. Some are newer. But, even the original market vendors have new stories to tell, with new paths that have been followed in these 10 years.
Today, I bring you Champaign Berry Farm!!
Champaign Berry Farm, located near Mutual on State Route 29, is a family-owned farm which has grown from 5 acres in 1995 to the current 23 acres of berries and 3 acres of peaches (as a reference, an acre is about the same size as a football field). The farm originated as a Future Farmers of America (FFA) project for the oldest son, Matt, and then to younger son, Kent. Proceeds from the farm helped pay for tuition for both sons at The Ohio State University. Demand for fresh berries has been strong and it became apparent that more acreage was needed. As the boys matured and moved away from the farm, married and started families, Mike and Cathy began to manage the farm full time. Both are now retired from off farm jobs and devote most of their time to the Berry Farm. Cathy views the farm as a “happy place” to be – outside, growing beautiful berries, providing healthy produce for consumers and being the first employer for many teens. Mike enjoyed picking wild black raspberries as a kid and loves them in pies, cobblers and fresh on ice cream and cereal. He wanted a nearby, easy source for berries so he started the farm along with help from Matt and Kent.
The business is primarily Pick Your Own during late June through mid-July and then again in late August until there is a hard freeze. Peaches are available already picked in July and August. The summer PYO produce includes black raspberries, red raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and currants. Our fall crops include red raspberries, golden raspberries and black raspberries. We also feature a variety of jams including black raspberry, red raspberry, red raspberry jalapeno and black raspberry sauce. If we have a peach crop we will also have peach habanero jam. Since the PYO demand has been extremely strong we only feature fresh raspberries and peaches in season on the Champaign Locally Grown Market. Our jams and sauce are available year-round.
