The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

(Opening song-Rocky Horror Picture Show)

Happy Tuesday, Happy Halloween Week, and Happy National Black Cat Day!! It’s all happening, on my favorite week of the year…Halloween Week!

And, I thought, what better way to usher it all in than with my favorite movie to celebrate, along with it’s opening song.

Taking you back in a time warp, 1978, the midnight movie in my downtown where I grew up, arriving to our first time to view The Rocky Horror Picture Show. No idea what to expect, but tons of excitement as older siblings to my West End friends, had seen this in the few years before us. We were armed with our bags of toast, umbrellas, squirt guns, etc.

We entered into the very historic, very majestic theatre, and let me tell you…it was the 70s, there were no rules on over packing the place, there were many forms of alcohol and general mayhem allowed, or at least over looked, and we all filed into the seating areas.

The opening song, the song I picked for today, came on with the big red lips, and the night, and life would never be the same. The characters on the screen, also the characters in real life, on the stage, acting out the moving, and the complete wildness of the evening unfolded. And, each time the movie played, in any town I was living in, I would attend a midnight showing. College, my first cities I lived in after college, all through high school….it became Halloween tradition.

Even now, I still have my vinyl of the soundtrack, and also the movie on DVD. For those of you who remember my little shop, in downtown Urbana, you will remember my Halloween windows, my vintage Halloween costumes, and my cocktail display bar, set up, with a tv, that always had this movie playing during the Halloween week.

Such amazing memories of this little known movie, that flopped in it’s early years, only to become the best underground movie, and a tradition for so many of us.

Anyway…it’s Tuesday, it’s Halloween week, and the market is full of bakers with fun Halloween baked goods! Why not order cute cookies and treats to wow any guests who may be stopping by. My sadness is that I always decorate my house to the hilt, and host a big party which cannot happen, this year, but in spirit, it’s happening in my head. And, I have Alexa blaring this movie’s soundtrack, right now, until I put the vinyl on, Halloween night…

Get those orders in, today…and, you will see many new items being added, and a new vendor or two, as we go.

Happy Halloween Week!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Sweet Thing

And I will stroll the merry way
And jump the hedges first
And I will drink the clear
Clean water for to quench my thirst
And I shall watch the ferry-boats
And they’ll get high
On a bluer ocean
Against tomorrow’s sky
And I will never grow so old again
And I will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain…
(Van Morrison)

Probably one of my very favorite of his songs. Off of one of my oldest, and most cherished albums, Astral Weeks.

Van Morrison music is perfect, it’s every moment music. It’s what I usually turn to, early evenings, lighting candles, and getting dinner prep happening, wine poured, a bit of writing accomplished, and as the sunlight fades to dusk, this is my music of that time of day.

It brings about the same easy feeling of comfort, as this market brings to me. And, all of the customers bring to me. Most of you are no longer customers, though, you have become somewhat of an extended family, each week, meeting up for chat time, laughs, tales of sadness, tales of happiness. The ease of sharing in your lives is something I look forward to, each and every week.

As we draw closer to the end of the month, we will see the fade out of much of the produce, but hopeful that the late season items will continue with the fall squash, kale, chard….the Flourish girls think we have seen the last of the fresh florals, but are working on things like houseplants, to continue to bring that little bit of colorful joy.

Comfort items are taking front and center at the market, and holiday shopping will begin.

Our own little local market, our own little sweet thing of joy, all in the form of goodness, and nourishment for your soul…

The market is open, new items seem to be added, daily, and we look forward to your weekly love….

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Nothing But Love!

Hello, good evening, happy Thursday!

Once again, I thank you for giving this market so much love, each and every week!

We are open, again, to take your orders!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Get It Before It’s Gone!

Champaign Berry just let me know that they will be set up with their late season sweet corn, tomorrow, at market pick up!

It will be the last time, until next year, so grab it while you can!

4pm-6pm!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Thank You!

Just a note of thanks to all who ordered, again, this week, and making it another super market week!!

I have added a Holiday Section for vendors who will be offering gift sets, and such, as special holiday items!

We will also be adding Market Gift Certificates to the Holiday Section making it even easier to give the gift of local!

I had hoped to have a holiday open house for the market, this year, but that will not be happening, due to the ongoing Covid situation. I also encourage you to holiday shop in our Artisans Gallery for unique gifts.

One last thing…if you shopped from the market, last week, I am running the payments, today. We are implementing a new POS system but it’s taking longer to complete inputting of customer names! So, do not be alarmed, the payments do not reflect this week’s market!

As always, I love you all more than words can say!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Gimme Some Lovin'

Gimme some a lovin’, Gimme some a lovin’,
Gimme some a lovin’ every day…
(Spencer Davis Group)

Good morning, lovely market customers…just a reminder that it’s Tuesday, and the market will be closing for orders, this evening, at 8pm, for the week! Why not show us some good lovin? We love the love that you give us, each and every week!

If you need to rev it up, a bit, on this rainy, cold morning, find this song, and turn it up! Dance to it, sing to it, and I guarantee the best start to your day.

Back when I was working a little pub, of one of my three jobs, that summer in college, we would get ready for the evenings by blaring this song on the old juke box. The bartenders would be readying the bar supplies, while us waitresses would be getting tables ready for the always over crowded, always hopping place. It was sort of our bonding time before the crowds flooded in. Good times, great money, all heading into my savings account for my eventual California move.

So, crank it up, sit down with the market, and just go crazy…and give us all some good lovin…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall

And it’s a hard and it’s a hard and it’s a hard hard
And it’s a hard rain’s a gonna fall…
(Bob Dylan)

I always fall back to Dylan on rainy days, and this song, well, it speaks for itself, but it’s also one of my favs, and I can be found singing this, many days, during my baking sessions.

Today is Monday, and I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

As I left you on Friday, I told you that my daughter was flying in from Florida so that we could wedding dress shop in Columbus. It was a magical weekend for her as most of her bridesmaids were with her, and I was so excited to have been included in all of the fun. It was an emotional time, as she emerged in what would become her choice of dresses. Beauty. Just beauty.

She’s my only, and she’s been a fighter since she was born. At six months of age, she needed open heart surgery for a heart defect she was born with. When she was in 6th grade, she had back surgery for scoliosis. In junior high, she went through a round of bullying, leading her to switch schools. But, all of this only made her stronger, made her a lovely soul, and taught her to always look out for those who need a bit of extra TLC. To help the underdogs. She is beauty, inside and out, and so this dress shopping day found me looking back at each obstacle in her life, but how each obstacle had a silver lining, and a lesson, and a new way to look at things.

So, I guess this song, means even more than just about the weather, to me. It’s about overcoming. I guess you could say this little market of love also survived many storms, in the beginning of it’s time, years ago, only to grow to what we have now.

A hard rain’s a gonna fall in all of our lives, at times, but together, we get through. I hope that is how you view this market. Yes, we have amazing products, we have the best of the best of local, we have super vendors, but most of all…this market has spirit, and love, and stamina, and compassion…

On this rain soaked day, why not work on your market orders? We will close, for the week, tomorrow eve, at 8pm, and I want to see all of your lovely faces on Thursday, at market pick up…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Our House

I’ll light the fire
You put the flowers in the vase that you bought today
Staring at the fire for hours and hours while I listen to you
Play your love songs all night long for me, only for me

Come to me now and rest your head for just five minutes, everything is good
Such a cozy room, the windows are illuminated by the
Sunshine through them, fiery gems for you, only for you

Our house is a very, very, very fine house with two cats in the yard
Life used to be so hard
Now everything is easy ’cause of you
And our la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

Our house is a very, very, very fine house with two cats in the yard
Life used to be so hard
Now everything is easy ’cause of you
And our

I’ll light the fire while you place the flowers in the vase that you bought today…
(Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young)

This song comes to us from long time customer Laura Zureich, as it was raining and chilly, yesterday, and I was loading her car up with all of her market purchases. She had no idea how much I love this song, how it always marks the late fall season, for me, and how the album, Deja Vu, is one of my most loved, worn, and treasured albums in my collection.

Also, the love and peace that this song invokes reminds me of all the loveliness that I feel our market embodies. I’m hoping you always drive off feeling the same vibe.

It also reminds me of a summer house that a bunch of friends rented, one summer, when I was in college. I was working two jobs, that summer…one, as a retail girl at Casual Corner, and one as an advertising intern at a local newspaper. The days were long, and busy, and full of learning, but it was always so comforting to know that at the end of the day, that house would be full of friends, food, wine, music, and always new faces drifting in and out, becoming our little summer family of mismatched friends. Simple times, with simple ways, but the communal feeling of that summer never leaves me. This album was thrown on the stereo, almost daily.

Anyway…all of this to say that the feelings it brings me, are also the feelings that the communal spirit of our market brings me…

It’s Friday, and the market awaits you…I will be taking the next two days off as it’s wedding dress shopping for my daughter who is flying in this evening from Florida! The adventure begins…and, as she and her groom to be are almost complete with the building of their own first home, my plan is to give them so many iconic old albums for their turntable that I gave them, last Christmas, so that their house will also always be filled with music…

Have a lovely weekend, and get your orders in…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

I Bid You Goodnight

It’s short and sweet, tonight, after a rain soaked market pick up…
