The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Sunday Strings

I never saw it coming, plain as could be
Rollin’ like the thunder, crashing like the sea
Like a lonesome whistle blowing, dancing in a dream
The sound of your heart calling, my favorite melody

You’re my earthquake, the sweetest heartache
You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul

You take my breath away, you know just what to say
You shake me down to my soul, you’re my earthquake

I’ve seen the highest of the highs and lowest of lows
Stood up on the mountain, traveled down a broken road
Like a wild wind a-howling, you shook me to the ground
Tearing down the shadows, shining through the clouds

You’re my earthquake, the sweetest heartache
You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul
You take my breath away, you know just what to say
You shake me down to my soul, you’re my earthquake

There’s a beauty in this world, it can break your heart in two
But there’s no other way to say, you know just what to do

You’re my earthquake, the sweetest heartache
You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul
You take my breath away, you know just what to say
You shake me down to my soul, you’re my earthquake…
(Earthquake-The Black Lillies)

Song Implant from market customers…William and Teresa O’Hair

I love being turned on to music and groups that I am not familiar with. Last Thursday, at market pick up, William and Teresa pulled up in their beautiful vintage sports car, and not only handed me a print out of their favorite song, but also a cd that they had burned, for me, of an entire album of the Black Lillies.

As per usual, on a Thursday, after the busy market, I jump into my own car, turn up music, and let my mind go blank for the drive to my house. I popped their cd in, and immediately was in love with this group. The strings, the vocals, this song that they picked.

But, what I was most in love with was the generosity and kindness that seems to be the underlying of this market, it’s customers, and it’s vendors. This little community that we seem to have built, each and every week, since moving the market. So, this beautiful song that they chose, also represents the beauty that I find in this market, and in all of your faces, each week.

I adore that you all bond with the market, and I love that you all show up, songs in hand, or songs that you email to me, or even songs that you just tell me about.

Life is beautiful, made even more so, by the music that you hear, in my opinion.

So, on this Sunday, why not seek out some music from The Black Lillies, enjoy, and use it for the backdrop to your ordering…

You’re the rock in my roll, you shake me down to my soul…could not describe my feelings, any better, for this market family…

Have a peaceful and love filled Sunday!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Cosmic Love Note

Friday Song Implant

I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane
Nobody knows if it’s something to bless or to blame
So far I ain’t found a rhyme or a reason to change
I’ve always been crazy but it’s kept me from going insane…

Our first song implant for the market week comes to us from customer, George King. George has been with us, for years, and he is our honey customer. I smile each time I see his order come in because it’s always honey, and I always love to see him in the car line because he has the best smile, and is always so friendly.

This is his song pick from Waylon Jennings…I’ve Always Been Crazy…and, I picked the last verse of the song, because well, doesn’t this fit all of us, just a bit? Maybe some, more than others, but I have to say…I do relate…lol.

The market is waiting for all of your lovely orders! I couldn’t sleep, for a bit, last night, and saw that some of you were also a bit on the sleepless train, as well, as there were so many midnight orders rolling in.

Happy Friday, and why not celebrate the little crazy in all of us…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

She Loves You

She loves you, yeah yeah yeah
She loves you, yeah yeah yeah
With a love like that
You know you should be glad…
( The Beatles)

She, being me, and yes…I love you all!

Tonight was one of those nights where there was enough time for me to mix and mingle with so many of you!

I love the songs you threw me, the conversations, the classic car, and the general bond that has formed!

This market, it’s vendors and it’s customers, never cease to amaze me!

We seem to have woven a thread of hope, of support, of friendship, and of fearlessness, that warms my heart!

You all are the heart and soul of this lovely market, and I love you, yeah, yeah, yeah…

I can hardly wait to unveil the tunes that you all gave me, tonight!

The market is now open, and we would love to make your week an easy one…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Sing A Song

Sing, sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things not bad
Sing of happy not sad

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple to last your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough for anyone else to hear
Just sing, sing a song

Sing, sing a song
Let the world sing along
Sing of love there could be
Sing for you and for me

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple to last your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough for anyone else to hear
Just sing, sing a song…
(The Carpenters)

Little known fact about me…when I was a child of the 70s, I loved cheesy variety shows on tv, and bubblegum pop on the radio…this song was always a favorite of mine to stand in front of my mirror, my jump rope microphone in hand, and sing at the top of my lungs…

Anyway…that little trip down my youthful days path, was just to remind you that it is market order pick up day, I can hardly wait for the songs you throw at me, today, and again, no time slots…just come out between 4pm-6pm, unless life gets in the way, and you need a Friday morning pick up!

We had another great market with great sales, and welcomed another three new customers to the family!!

Remember…if I have your card on file, no need to worry about payment, you are covered. If you are new, you can pay three ways…call me, ahead, with a debit/credit card number, pay by check with it made out to Oakview Farm Meats, OR, pay in cash, in a ziplock bag or envelope, with your name on it!

It’s that simple…you don’t even need to get out of your cars…see you at 4pm, and remember…

Sing that song…it’s what the world needs…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Sunday Morning Vibes

I want to thank you for giving me the best day of my life…
Oh just to be with you is having the best day of my life…
(Thank You-Dido)
Song Implant/Memory-Customer Bev Titus

This song stands alone, in it’s beauty. I remember it’s release, and I remember listening to it, many times, taking my daughter to her early years of school, in our first years after moving to the Urbana area. It was a hard move for her, as we moved from our little beach town in Florida. Her little school was right off the beach, in a very free flowing, barefoot learning experience. The move, the new school, the new climate, leaving her little friends, the only house she knew, the playgrounds, beaches…it was all just so hard. This song used to calm us, both, as we listened to this driving to school drop off.

On Friday, at market pick up, Bev gave me a handwritten memory of this song, what it meant to her, and the bittersweet memories it holds of her very brave, very beautiful, very young daughter to have been lost in the very ugliness of the 9/11 tragedies, Alicia Titus.

Bev’s memory and this song are of one of the last fun filled evenings that she had spent with Alicia and their other daughter, as Alicia colored their other daughter’s hair, had music on, and they were singing, dancing, and making what would be one of their last memories, together, with Alicia.
To Bev, this song represented an insight into Alicia, a wish that they had both conveyed to each other, and it has become her heartwarming/bittersweet memory of those last sweet times.

The reason that I began with the story of my young daughter, and this song, is to share my never ending parallels with Bev.

Bev and I first got to know each other through my Cosmic Charlie business. My messages of peace, hope, love, intrigued her to reach out to me, as this was the message that she and her husband had set forth in Alicia’s memory. We began to bond, over the years, and with each time, one more layer of our crossing paths would be unveiled.

Alicia, though much younger than me, was also an American Airlines flight attendant. While I had left that career a few years, earlier, before the 9/11 events, I remember watching the horrific news feeds, and knowing what those flight attendants were going through in those last moments. I trained for those moments. You needed to be a selfless, compassionate, and giving person to be a flight attendant in those type of moments. We trained to put ourselves, last, and the passengers first. I wanted Bev to know that her daughter was an angel, in those moments, to so many strangers. Bev already knew that about her daughter, but I just needed to let her know, of our bond.

The next parallel that Bev unveiled was that Alicia and I were sisters of the same sorority. A sorority that emphasized being the light, giving graciously to others…of that, her daughter did.

Bev and I have bonded over being mothers with daughters, and she never forgets to ask about my own daughter, and her life, and her hopes and dreams.

I spoke, two years ago, at Bev’s request, at a peace movement. The speech I had planned, got crumbled up, as I decided to speak from my heart about the peaceful soul her daughter had to have possessed, the peacefulness that I had to fight for, for my own daughter, when intervention was needed in a school situation, and how love and peace will always prevail either in memory, or/also in those of us, left, to continue the fight for everyone to feel peace, comfort, and compassion…

And, so, to begin with my own memory of our move to Urbana, this song, and driving to those early days of school drop offs was another parallel, mother to mother, taking comfort…

This has been a very long, very heavy Sunday weblog but I mean to just show you that we all find healing, and peace, and my hopes is that this market, and myself, give you just that.

I have had so many market customers become so close, and dear to me, over the years, and I hold each of you in my heart…

Go forward with peace, love, and understanding, and in these times we are in, try to sprinkle it, wherever you go…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

For What It's Worth...

LYRICS
Something happen in here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

It’s time to stop, children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down

Battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It’s time to stop, children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down

What a field day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray, for our side

It’s time to stop, children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It hurts when you’re always afraid
Step out of line, the man comes and takes you away

It’s time to stop, children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down

Stop, children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s going down
(Buffalo Springfield)

This song implant came via email from market follower: Dennis

Actually, this song always makes me tear up because the lyrics not only spoke to 1967, but are always speaking to us, today, any day, any year…always something that can be applied to these lyrics.

The market is open. Your market manager had an XL glass of wine, last night, a great sleep, and a new determination, today, to just keep bringing the love…because, really, love and peace is all I strive to bring to you, each and every day.

Some of you may have noticed a big market clean up in the categories…I am still working on moving things around into categories that make sense, and make your shopping, easier.

Also…if you need to restock or add to your growing collection of face masks, I will be moving that category out of The Barkery, and giving it a Face Mask category.

Burns Bakery has returned from vacation!

We welcomed Kennedy Farms back, this week!

Have a great Friday, everyone!! It even looks like we may just get some RAIN!!

Sending all the love vibes…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing...

Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing
Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing, mama
Cause I’ll be standing on the side
When you check it out…Yeah
When you get it off…your trip
Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing…
Don’t you worry ’bout a thing…
(Stevie Wonder)
Song Implant from customer: Susan

Have you ever had a week? Like…nothing bad, nothing traumatic, but a whole lot of just things. One after the other. One minute you think…great, all under control. Next minute…what the ??? Insert your own expletives, lol.

Anyway, that has been my week. Then, tonight, we tried different roles at market pick up…um, not to my liking. My control ways took over, the customers in the beginning were confused, and quite frankly…I NEED my customer fix, each week!!!

My father does a fine job, but it was time to reel him in, back to the greenhouse, lol. Your other market manager was trying to keep it all together, doing both of their jobs, and I was stuck in the greenhouse window.

Intermission…then Act Two.

I returned to my outside post, and LOVED conversing with all of you in the second half of the evening. And, you have no idea what your spirits do for me. Your conversations, your life sharing events, and your spiritual conversations.

So, I got to end my evening, on the loveliness of two conversations, lifting me up, and brushing off my spirit and my sparkle.

And, ended with this song implant from Susan, after a long chat on the state of things..

Also…to the customers who offered me some of their orders, because of my lack of remembering to order, to the gifts that were given to me, and just for all of your kindness…thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

This little local market of love…don’t you worry ’bout a thing…

I am opening things up early, this evening…and also, thank you for showing the girls of Flourish so much LOVE!!!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam

Box Of Rain

Look out of any window
Any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
Birds are winging or rain is falling from a heavy sky

What do you want me to do
To do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon long ago

Walk out of any doorway
Feel your way, feel your way like the day before
Maybe you’ll find direction
Around some corner where it’s been waiting to meet you
What do you want me to do
To watch for you while you were sleeping?
Then please don’t be surprised
When you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes, you find by you
You can see clear to another day
Maybe been seen before
Through other eyes on other days while going home
What do you want me to do
To do for you to see you through?
It’s all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams to another land
Maybe you’re tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken
And thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
To do for you to see you through
A box of rain will ease the pain
And love will see you through

Just a box of rain
Wind and water
Believe it if you need it
If you don’t, just pass it on
Sun and shower
Wind and rain
In and out the window like a moth before a flame

And it’s just a box of rain
I don’t know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
Or leave it if you dare
And it’s just a box of rain
Or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
And a short time to be there…
(Box Of Rain-Grateful Dead)

Aside from the title implying that we really, really could use our own box of rain, this Grateful Dead song is one that I always turn to for my own peaceful being. My sanity. My locking out the world when it all gets too heavy for this hippie heart who tries so hard to only know love and peace.

This market brings me the same feeling as this song. It makes my heart so very happy to see each of you at pick up, to wave or chat as I fill your cars with your orders. I love watching each of you place your orders, and I feel like with each week, the bonds grow stronger as a market family.

I hope that the market does the same for you. Gives you a little oasis on a Thursday afternoon, to just sit, enjoy the scenery, listen to a tune while you wait on us to get your orders to you, and as you go on your way, I hope that we have provided your own box of rain…for whatever you may need to take away with you.

I will see you all, this evening…and, as we have done away with the assigned time slots, the line does get a bit backed up, but not for long, and your patience, kindness, friendship, and love are always so appreciated.

As always, I ask that you throw me a song…even write it on a piece of paper with your name, as I love to build the musically charged weblog with your music library, as well as mine.

And, to put more brightness into your day, stop at the bloom bar, after getting your order, and show the girls from Flourish some love…

Sending you the Thursday love vibes…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
