The Weblog

The local foods movement is alive and well in Champaign County! Here are some updates on other projects while we finalize our virtual market:

Local Producers Map:
Our local producers map is ready for publication and you will soon be able to find it on gochampaign.com. Copies will be distributed around the community, in the local telephone book, and other “hangouts”. The guide lists the location and contact information for nearly 50 local producers within our county. The map was a project of the Local Food Council and printed with the help of some local sponsors including the Monument Square District, Champaign Bank, the Community Improvement Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Farm Bureau and others. It is a great start to finding a local source for Champaign County’s finest!

Harvest Moon

But there’s a full moon risin…’
Let’s go dancin’ in the light…
We know where the music’s playin…’
Let’s go out and feel the night…
(Harvest Moon-Neil Young)

Yes…it’s fall, you can feel a slight change in the air, the breeze, the shadows from the sun, and the leaves that are now drifting down to the ground.

We saw the Super Moon, a Harvest Moon, on Sunday evening. I sat out on my back deck, glass of wine, waiting for the cloudy sky to allow a glimpse of the moon. And finally, it happened. Magical.

Fall also brings about a shift in our produce. We said goodbye to strawberries, long ago, but you know what…we now have apples!!!! And, although we do not have a virtual market apple vendor, we do have Herr Family Farms, who bring in their goodness, when they feel they have enough!!

So…today is Apple Day at market pick up!! Even if you didn’t get to place a market order, feel free to groove to the YMCA lobby at 4:15 for bags of apples!! They will go fast so get there, quickly!!

Fall is ALL about the apple…don’t miss out!!!!

And, on a last note…Harvest. We are now in harvest season, and we want to show all of our local farmers some love. Be kind, especially on the roads. I have seen so many impatient drivers, this past week, behind farmers on the roads. Show some kindness, and remember…our local farmers feed us…

See everyone, tonight, at market pick up!!!

Sunday in the Country

Just a quick reminder that we will be closing the door to the reservations for the upcoming State Of The Plate, tomorrow, at noon!!

The event will take place, once again, at The Pretty Prairie Barn, and will be held this coming Sunday, October 4th, 12:30 until 3:00pm.

A beautiful setting with amazing local foods, a chance to meet many of your favorite vendors, and an afternoon in an amazing setting! You will also get to hear speakers like…Swisher Hill Herbs, End Of The Road Farms, Bad Seed Mustard, and your own market manager speaking on behalf of this little local market of love…

I would love to have a virtual market group of customers and vendors sharing tables, meeting, talking, getting to know who brings your food in, each week, and who is buying the local products from this market. An intimate afternoon of virtual market fun…breaking bread, getting to know each other, getting to know the real life stories of some of our vendors…

To make it even easier, you can email me your reservations, I will get those names to the Chamber, we will reserve your seats, and you can make sure to pay for your tickets at virtual market pick up, Thursday evening.

Let me know before noon, tomorrow!!

Mama Said...

…there’d be days like this…

Hello, lovely little market of love customers!!

Today was definitely one of those days where one mishap and was met with another mishap, an oven burn was met with another oven burn. Burned bread was met with, hey, another burned bread.

Each step I tried to take was met with nothing but irritation…

And then I arrived to the market to get it up and running. Late, I might add, because, well, I was dealing with burned fingers and burned bread!! But, then I regrouped, met up with my assistant managers, the customers, the staff of the YMCA, and at once, the day was suddenly a big love fest…the day was not so bad, the laughter and friendship was overpowering, and at once, I was back to the day…

Let this market turn your day around…let us supply you with the best of the best in local, while we shower you with love…

I open the market, tonight, for the week, again!!

We hope to see you all take advantage of the local goodness that we have to offer…

Mama said there’d be days like this…but you can turn it all around, make it easy on yourself, and know that you are doing it all, locally…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

In The Midnight Hour

I’m gonna wait ‘till the midnight hour…
That’s when my love comes tumbling down…
(In The Midnight Hour-Wilson Pickett)

So, it’s not the midnight hour, BUT, we ARE in the last hour of this week’s market!!

Stop whatever you are doing, think about how we can help you shop, and place your orders!

We have talked about local love, we are getting ready for State Of The Plate, we have talked about the pleasure of cooking with simple, local products. We have talked about the nutrition, the affordability, the pride in shopping for your food, right here, right where it is grown and produced…

Take this last hour…show us some local love…

Feed Your Head

Why reserve a day (or even a few hours) for meal prep?
•You’ll save time cooking throughout the week…
•You’ll have a healthy meal waiting for you when you’re experiencing fatigue or have an especially busy schedule….
•You won’t need to worry about stopping at the grocery store after work….
•You won’t need to worry about what you’re going to make for dinner – its already done!…
•You’ll save money by planning out meals and grocery purchases ahead of time….
•You’ll be more likely to reach your health goals (weight loss, muscle building, weight gain, etc.)…

One more note of love from your market manager…

I am, right at this moment, in my kitchen, with trays of local tomatoes all slow roasting in my ovens. Later, I will begin to sauté the rest of the ingredients for a few things this week.

Tomorrow, is the kick off for Cosmic Soup Season, at The Depot Coffeehouse. We rock the sandwiches and the soups in there!! The Depot has been my home away from home from the beginning of Cosmic Charlie. My breads are used for their sandwiches, and now, everyone gets excited for soup season!

Also, this weekend hosts another fun filled, great time of a local event…The Simon Kenton Chili Cook Off!!

Once again, I will be set up as a vendor with Oakview Farm Meats as we rock locally produced sandwiches, my breads, each of us sell chili, AND, you can even get a combo of Cosmic/Oakview chili!! It’s great fun, it’s an annual local event, and for many of us, it marks the end to a very long summer of multiple vending at various farmers markets, and festivals. Not all markets close down, but I am speaking from my markets…except for this year round lovely market.

ANYWAY…this time of year is when I turn back to the days when I was running my daughter to every activity, working a cool little part time gig, and making sure that when we arrived home, each evening, there was something healthy to pull out for dinner.

This is where I learned to make certain things, in larger batches, when items are in season, and then having them on hand for quick grab and go, give me a glass of wine, dinners…stress free, cost friendly, and super nutrition packed!

Back then, I wish this market had been in existence. I would have breezed through, placed my order, been able to race in, grab my order, feel good about shopping local, feel good about the cost friendly prices, AND, loaded up my pantry, fridge, and freezer, for quick, at home dinners…

Think about that as you get ready to place your orders before we close, this evening!

Right now, the trays of slow roasted tomatoes will come out of the oven, cool, go into containers for my fridge, and be ready to add to my Cosmic Soup of the Week, at The Depot, AND be ready when I am making Cosmic Veggie Chili to serve at this weekend’s event.

Do yourself a favor, show yourself some love, and do the planning/ordering/cooking to feed your head…

The market will close at 10pm, this evening…don’t be left with fast food options at the end of your busy evenings. Shop with us…let us be part of your evening dinner plans…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
