The process of saponification consumes the lye, converting the oils into soap. There is no lye left in the final product. Sometimes a layer of soda ash (sodium carbonate aka washing soda) forms as the bars cure. This is a thin layer of white which will wash off with first use. It is not harmful and is completely normal. Some feel it adds to the rustic charm! It lathers beautifully! Great to use for shaving too! Cut a bar in half and use the smaller size for hand bars at your sinks.
